Born from the ashes and poverty of post WW2 Northern Italy, Marzadro Distillery was not an overnight success.  Bored with her job as a domestic servant, Sabina Marzadro founded the business in 1949. It was a hard slog but Sabina had two big things in her favour: Pristine botanicals of Italy’s alpine Trentio region and a burning desire to make great grappa.

Slowly but surely Marzadro perfected their skills, developing some of Italy’s finest grappas and adding liqueurs, amaro, whisky, cremes and herbal distillations along the way.

Nowadays run by Sabina’s grandchildren, Marzadro is based in the beautiful mediaeval mountain village of Nogaredo, nestled in the Dolomites just north of Lake Garda. Their drinks are top quality, commanding massive respect in Italy’s hard to impress distilling sector. Artifex hold by far the UK’s biggest range of their products.

Italy, along with France is probably the world leader for food and drink quality. Mediocrity just isn’t tolerated at all.  Artifex has the UK’s biggest range of Amaro and Marzadro’s fine version is yet another superb addition to our roster.

Tasting Notes

On the eye, Amaro Marzadro presents a beautiful, clear and brilliant ruby red colour. The bouquet immediately enraptures the sense of smell, intoxicating with a mixture of balsamic scents, aromatic mountain herbs, and notes of dark spices. Hints of noble woods and undergrowth layer beautifully beneath a dominant, bitter note reminiscent of cinchona. On the palate, a soft but powerful sip emerges. It is young and perfectly balanced between a crisp, bitter perception and the sweet warmth of alpine spices. Alpine rhubarb provides a unique flavour profile that is bitter and fresh at the same time, leading into a deeply satisfying, persistent finish.

Distilling Methods

Made from plants collected on the Monte Baldo massif, 2218 metres above sea level, Amaro Marzadro features twenty botanical varieties, including Cape aloe, alpine rhubarb, greater gentian, chamomile, fennel, holy thistle, galega, and various types of yarrow, that are carefully handpicked from the mountain slopes. To extract their natural aromas and characteristics, these selected botanicals undergo a meticulous cold maceration for a period ranging from 20 to 30 days. The powerful herbal infusion obtained is subsequently combined with pure water from Trentino and sugar to perfectly balance its structural profile.

Serving Suggestions & Cocktail Pairings

This versatile amaro is highly recommended as a delicious end to a meal, traditionally served neat and very cold (ideal temperature of 6–8°C) or over a large cube of ice with a fresh twist of citrus peel to heighten its balsamic notes. For a lighter, refreshing alternative, mix it with premium soda water or tonic and an orange wedge to create a vibrant alpine aperitif. It also functions beautifully as a complex bitter base in premium mixology, allowing you to swap it into a classic Negroni or an Amaro Sour alongside high-quality bourbon and fresh lemon juice.

Food Matching

The complex, bittersweet equilibrium of this liqueur makes it a wonderful partner for food. Pair it alongside rich, post-dinner treats such as dark chocolate tarts, artisanal cocoa-dusted truffles, or a traditional spiced fruit cake. For a savoury alternative, it serves as an excellent companion to a mature cheese board—particularly sharp, aged cheeses or local alpine varieties—where its refreshing herbaceous acidity cuts through the richness beautifully.
