Vecchio Magazzino Dogonale means Old Customs Warehouse in Italian.

Giacomo, great-great grandfather of current owner Ivano Trombino ran a small, rural warehouse in Consenza, Calabria from the 1850’s that sold farm produce, agricultural goods and crucially, smuggled spirits. In 1871, three English sailors, tired of life at sea arrived and worked here for decades. Their names were Jefferson, Roger and Gil and these are names of some of Vecchio’s finest creations.  Legend has it that the Englishmen began distilling here and a long tradition of locally produced spirits was born.

The details of this story are lost to time, but what isn’t under dispute is the incredible quality of Vecchio’s drinks. It’s good country in Consenza with a broad range of local botanicals from sun drenched coastal plains to high altitude mountain terroir and these have enabled Vecchio to produce a fine and varied range of wonderful spirits.  Our suggestion? Try them all!

At 24% ABV, Amaro Frack is hardly the hardest of liquor, but watch out, danger lies herein!

Moreishly addictive, wildly wonderful, you’ll chug down a bucketload if you’re not careful and feel fracked the following morning. Drink responsibly!  A fracking good drink.

Tasting Notes

On the palate, this extraordinary herbal liqueur reveals a masterfully undisciplined evolution. The initial sensation is remarkably soft and sweet, coats the tongue with a rich roundness, and delivers prominent notes of Mediterranean herbs alongside a citrusy brightness of Roccella Ionica bergamot, sweet and bitter oranges, and PGI lemons. As the liquid develops in the mouth, the initial sweetness gracefully fades into a wonderfully persistent, intense, and deeply complex balsamic finish dominated by robust tones of gentian root and cinchona bark.

Product Description

Amaro Frack is a premium, completely natural, artisanal Italian bitter crafted in small batches within Calabria. Strikingly independent and self-described as an "evening amaro, against the fashion", it is produced in extremely limited quantities of only 1,800 litres a year. Bottled at an alcohol content of 24% ABV in a 50 cl commercial format, this sophisticated meditation liqueur showcases a remarkably complex recipe that celebrates the raw, rural beauty of the Calabrian territory.

Distilling Methods

Rather than being a standard distillate, the liquid is built from the union of three separately prepared infusions worked entirely from fresh, local botanicals—including rosemary, oregano, and rhubarb.

The complex production process begins with a base of passito raisin wine that is enriched with native plants and cooked over an open fire. After undergoing a coarse filtration through traditional linen cloths, it is carefully combined with distinct hydroalcoholic botanical infusions. A unique, thermo-refrigerated technique is utilised to preserve the pristine life of the fresh infusions. The final product requires a patient production cycle that takes an average of 12 months to close, ensuring a perfectly harmonised structure.

Serving & Cocktail Suggestions

• Straight & Neat: It is highly transversal and performs magnificently when served straight at room temperature or slightly chilled (around 14–16°C) as a classic after-dinner digestif.
• On the Rocks: Pour a generous measure over a large block of ice in a rocks glass, garnished with a fresh sprig of rosemary or a twist of orange peel to enhance its Mediterranean aromatics.
• The Transversal Stir: Because of its vinous base and complex bitter structure, it is exalted when combined with premium sweet red vermouth and a dash of gin for a dark, herbaceous twist on a classic Negroni.

Food Pairings

Amaro Frack makes a sublime partner for rich desserts based on premium dark chocolate, as the herbal bitterness perfectly cuts through the cocoa fat. It also matches beautifully with mature, aged cheeses or dry fruit tarts, echoing the underlying dried-fruit and resinous notes of the cooked passito wine base.
