Situated in Alba, the lovely capital of the Piedmontese Langhe wine district, Distilleria Marolo has an enviable array of fresh, local botanicals to hand.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, Amaro Ulrich displays an intense and vibrant amber colour. Pronounced aromatic notes of gentian, peppermint, and cloves instantly emerge, blending with delicate accents of dark caramel, chamomile, and citrus peel.

The palate features a complex olfactory journey where the sweetness of toffee and the freshness of mint perfectly balance with the bitterness of the herbs. Warm grappa notes give way to prominent flavours of wormwood, genepi, and aniseed, layered with black liquorice through the middle. The finish is remarkably long, dry, warming, and herbaceous.

Description

Originally formulated in 1854, Amaro Ulrich is a historic herbal liqueur crafted with a meticulous selection of 19 distinct alpine herbs, flowers, fruits, and roots collected from pristine valleys. This premium expression comes in a standard 70 cl bottle size and features an alcohol content of 32% ABV.

A unique formulation gives it a distinctive character that functions as an effective and reinvigorating digestif. The entirely traditional processing systems go beyond modern schemes and keep the active and aromatic ingredients that characterize the product unaltered.

Estate History and Distilling Methods

The Ulrich company was established back in 1854 by the renowned botanist and physician-herbalist Dr Domenico Ulrich. It stood out as one of the very first entities in Italy to specialize in processing aromatic herbs on an industrial scale, relying purely on raw materials grown in Piedmont and Italy. The historic brand received a gold medal in 1885 from the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry, and Commerce, alongside a royal patent from the King of Italy.

In 2016, the celebrated Marolo Distillery in Alba, Piedmont, famous for its masterfully crafted grappa, revived the legendary brand. To capture the authentic alpine profiles, they utilize the traditional tincture and infusion method, allowing a long maceration of the botanicals to preserve the natural oils and active principles.

Serving Suggestions

Neat or Chilled: Best enjoyed straight in a small tulip glass at the end of a meal to fully appreciate its complex digestive properties.

On the Rocks: Serve over large cubes of ice with a twist of orange peel to open up the citrus and mint notes.

Cocktail Recommendations

Amaro Spritz: Combine 50ml Amaro Ulrich, 75ml Prosecco, and a splash of soda water in a wine glass filled with ice, garnished with an orange slice.

Black Negroni: Substitute the traditional sweet vermouth or Campari with Amaro Ulrich, mixing it with equal parts London Dry Gin for an alpine twist on the timeless classic.

Food Pairings

Cheeses: Pairs beautifully with mature, hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or sharp, alpine varieties that cut through the spirit's herbal intensity.

Savory Snacks: Complements salted almonds, green olives, or dark rye bread topped with cured meats like bresaola.

Desserts and Teas: Excellent alongside dark chocolate tarts, caramelized apple desserts, or served right next to a warm cup of herbal black tea.
