Vecchio Magazzino Dogonale means Old Customs Warehouse in Italian.

Giacomo, great-great grandfather of current owner Ivano Trombino ran a small, rural warehouse in Consenza, Calabria from the 1850’s that sold farm produce, agricultural goods and crucially, smuggled spirits. In 1871, three English sailors, tired of life at sea arrived and worked here for decades. Their names were Jefferson, Roger and Gil and these are names of some of Vecchio’s finest creations. Legend has it that the Englishmen began distilling here and a long tradition of locally produced spirits was born.

The details of this story are lost to time, but what isn’t under dispute is the incredible quality of Vecchio’s drinks. It’s good country in Consenza with a broad range of local botanicals from sun drenched coastal plains to high altitude mountain terroir and these have enabled Vecchio to produce a fine and varied range of wonderful spirits.  Our suggestion? Try them all!

Amaro Meraviglioso is a premium, craft Italian herbal liqueur that beautifully balances rich complexity with a profound respect for land and tradition. Bottled at a balanced 25% ABV and presented in a classic 70 cl bottle size, it represents the evolving landscape of authentic rural spirits.

Tasting Notes

•    Appearance: A deep, intense brown colour enhanced by warm mahogany highlights.
•    Aroma: A complex, multi-layered bouquet where medicinal herbs intertwine with vibrant and crisp balsamic top notes.
•    Palate: Strong, well-structured, and highly harmonious on the palate. It delivers a precise balance between deeply bitter components—driven by gentian, rhubarb, and quassia—and distinctly fresh, green, and balsamic elements, including eucalyptus, bay leaf, rosemary, pine, aloe, basil, and olive leaves.
•    Finish: Long, warm, and exceptionally clean, leaving a lingering herbaceous trail.

Distilling Methods

The core botanicals used for this expression are sourced exclusively from designated, private plots of land, specifically the 300/343 Martorano and 674 Bisignano land parcels. In keeping with artisanal tradition, the raw ingredients are carefully selected and undergo a meticulous maceration process in alcohol over a prolonged period to fully express their aromatic properties. The blend is then allowed to mature, with aging in wooden casks contributing heavily to a beautifully integrated structure and its remarkably clean finish. It stands proudly as a highly personal expression, bearing the family signature of Trombino & Sons directly on the label.

Serving Suggestions

To appreciate its rich botanical character, serve Amaro Meraviglioso at room temperature or lightly chilled from the fridge. Avoid placing the bottle in the freezer, as extreme sub-zero temperatures will mute the delicate vegetable and balsamic notes. It is magnificent poured neat as a classic digestif after a meal. Alternatively, pour it over a few large ice cubes in a tumbler and garnish with a twist of fresh orange peel or a slice of ginger.

Cocktail Suggestions

•    The Agave Botanical: Because of its unique herbaceous punch, this amaro pairs extraordinarily well with agave spirits. Substitute sweet vermouth or traditional modifiers in a Mezcal or Tequila Negroni to create a deeply earthy, complex cocktail.

•    Meraviglioso Highball: For a refreshing daytime serve, mix 50 ml of the amaro over plenty of ice, top with a premium tonic water or soda, and stir gently. The bitter quinine highlights the liqueur’s natural pine and eucalyptus notes.

Black Manhattan Variation: Replace standard amari with Meraviglioso alongside a robust rye whisky or dark rum, finished with a dash of aromatic bitters for a sophisticated, stirred evening drink.

Food Pairings

The deep bittersweet architecture of Amaro Meraviglioso makes it a wonderful companion for rich finishes. It pairs elegantly alongside a platter of dried figs, traditional Italian nougat (torrone), or a few squares of dark chocolate. The herbal profile also cuts beautifully through the sweetness of baked desserts and autumn fruit tarts.
