Gamondi Amaro is a traditional Italian digestif based on an 1890 recipe from herbalist Carlo Gamondi. Crafted in Piedmont, it features 29 botanicals and a 27% ABV. It is highly regarded for its balance of sweet citrus and herbal bitterness, making it an excellent neat digestif or cocktail base.
Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes
Gamondi Amaro delivers a well-rounded, bittersweet profile:
- Appearance: Rich, clear amber.
- Nose: Highly aromatic and layered, offering scents of fresh blood orange, tangerine, and distinct florals. Beneath the citrus, you will find underlying earthy notes of gentian and a delicate touch of liquorice.
- Palate: The entry is soft and pleasantly sweet, thanks to natural caramelization. This immediately transitions into a complex, bittersweet herbal profile. Prominent botanicals include sweet and bitter orange peel, vanilla, mint, and cinnamon.
- Finish: Smooth and lingering, fading gracefully from sweet to a mild, herbaceous, and spicy finish.
How it is made:-
The exceptional complexity of Gamondi Amaro comes from a two-stage cold maceration process:
1. The Bitter Stage: Roots, barks, and herbs (including gentian, rhubarb, wormwood, Cape aloe, and cinchona) are steeped for 40 days to extract the characteristic bitter backbone.
2. The Aromatic Stage: Sweet and bitter orange peels, tangerine, vanilla, mint, and cinnamon are steeped for 30 days to contribute the sweet, spicy, and floral top notes.
Serving Suggestions
- Digestif (Neat or Rocks): Traditionally enjoyed as an after-dinner drink, served neat at room temperature or poured over ice to let the herbal qualities shine.
- In Cocktails: Its balanced sweetness makes it highly versatile in mixed drinks. It pairs beautifully with lemon juice and ginger beer for a Gamondi Mule, or as a rich, botanical modifier in spirit-forward cocktails.
A true herbal classic in a beautifully engraved, large 100cl bottle.
