L'Orvietan - A Legacy Reborn

An Ancient Remedy, Rediscovered

L'Orvietan traces its origins to the early 17th century, when a remarkable herbal preparation from the hilltop city of Orvieto began to spread across Europe. Known as L’Orvietan, it was a potent blend of more than twenty‑five medicinal herbs, hand‑pressed and filtered through cloth, and sold by travelling healers who carried its reputation from market squares to royal courts. 

The First Orvietano

The story begins in 1603, when Girolamo Ferranti received official permission from the Municipality of Orvieto to sell his preparation in the public square. Ferranti’s remedy quickly gained fame, reaching Paris, Florence, Siena and beyond. By the mid‑1600s, it had become so well known that European dictionaries defined “Orvietano” simply as a famous antidote invented in Orvieto.

A Remedy Fit for Kings

One of Ferranti’s successors, Cristoforo Contugi, carried the tradition into France. In 1647, he secured an exclusive privilege from Louis XIV, the Sun King himself, a habitual consumer of the preparation. Contugi’s distinctive sun emblem became a mark of authenticity, protecting the remedy from countless imitations circulating across Europe. 

A Cultural Phenomenon

For nearly two centuries, Orvietan appeared in medical treatises, pharmacopoeias and literature. It was referenced by Molière, Voltaire, Leibniz, Sir Walter Scott, Balzac and Chateaubriand, a testament to its cultural reach. Apothecaries across Europe kept jars labelled Orvietan, and numerous formulas, both secret and published, circulated among physicians and herbalists.

From Forgotten Elixir to Modern Revival

By the late 19th century, scholars such as Le Paulmier and Planchon began documenting the remedy’s history, preserving formulas and archival material. Their work laid the foundation for modern researchers Patrizia Catellani and Renzo Consoli, who meticulously reconstructed the ideal recipe from thirty‑five surviving formulas.

Using the historically validated recipe and traditional methods, the modern preparation honours the original spirit of L’Orvietan, a complex herbal maceration crafted with care, knowledge and respect for centuries of tradition. Bottled in Orvieto once again, it invites today’s drinkers to experience a piece of European history in every sip.
